The paper was presented at the World Philosophers Meet '98 in Geneva, Switzerland on 18-21 August 1998. It is included in the proceedings of the convention in the section "Participation and Empowerment".

Abstract

The paper presents a brief assessment of the current water supply situation and highlights some present and future challenges facing the world's water managers. It describes a notable land and water management success story in India, conducted by Mr. A. Hazari in Relegen Siddhi region. The paper then mentions the role of the Global Water Partnership in the area of networking water development professionals. This organization has a plan aimed at collecting and disseminating information on water and land related aspects. One of the main goals is to identify priorities and gaps in service provided for integrated water resource management. The list of priorities is noted in the paper. The establishment of a commisison to investigate water issues in the 21th century is described. The commission is tasked with creating a World Vision for water capture and use in the next century. One of the conclusions include the statement that "global network will encourage the creation of new mutli-disciplinarynetworks, especially those related to socio-economic development focusing on the upliftment of individuals as well as communities, regions and countries."
