Appropriate Water Technology for "Tanker Villages" and Hilltop Villages of Thana District, Maharashtra, India

Appropriate Technology for Tanker Villages

The type of technology to be implemented for tanker villages may not be standard. In the
past, the water problem has been attempted to be solved by drilling boreholes,
constructing hand-dug wells or bandaras, according to the geomorphologic conditions of
the village and surrounding areas.
If we exclude the construction of water supply systems, which are costly and difficult to
maintain (the author has observed many costly water supply systems which were
abandoned for lack of maintenance), the possible appropriate technologies, in addition to
are the drilling or digging of wells in nearby favourable areas, are the groundwater
recharge technologies, the development of artificial aquifers, and the rain harvesting
technologies, briefly described ahead.
