HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT BY APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY IN SOUTHERN COUNTRIES

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

Problems Preventing Development

The present state of affairs shows that developing countries are, in most cases, affected by
increasing indebtedness and poverty, and are therefore unable to support themselves. This is
due to many factors such as wide-spread illiteracy, fast population growth, limited technical
knowledge, lack of proper planning for the exploitation of its natural resources, increasing
interest towards extracting economic gains in the shortest time.

As consequence of this, profits are concentrated in the hands of a few persons to the detriment
of welfare of the communities. In addition, the natural resources have often been unwisely
exploited while, in some other cases, they remain untapped due to lack of funds and proper
planning. In the past, it has not been rare to observe that the goals of development projects
have been dominated mainly by private interest, by promoting a return on capital investment
in a short time, while little or no consideration was given to social and environmental aspects.
At present there is a particular need to invest in projects focusing on social impact.
