HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT BY APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY IN SOUTHERN COUNTRIES

The improvement in life-style is a long-term process which can take place only if the programs
are sustainable. This can be achieved by adopting low-cost appropriate technology and
environmentally sound programs. The expected project impacts would result in an
improvement of living conditions by satisfying basic needs, distributing wealth, promoting
peace. This can be achieved by people's organisation, people's participation, democratisation
of power, awareness of the problems and willingness to solve them.

The relation between the micro and macro level strategies to implement development
programs should aim at:

-reinforcing the links between local and regional levels;
- identifying local needs and promote regional and national planning;
- applying democratic methods in project planning and implementation;
- helping NGOs, grass-root groups, and government officers to increase their awareness on
social issues;
- providing suggestions, information, services and give support to local organisations;
- exchanging information between communities and agencies at local
and regional levels.
