HOLISTIC APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT BY APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY IN SOUTHERN COUNTRIES

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

Contradictions and Problems in the Present State of Affairs

The present fast growing world population and the massive migration of people from one
country to another and from south to north, the many social problems such as alcoholism,
drug addiction, religion frictions, wide-spread poverty and diseases, especially in the southern
countries, environmental degradation, illiteracy, etc. represent a serious threat to world peace.

In addition, the present world economic system, helps, especially in developing countries, the
rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. In several countries, and India is not excluded,
the rich are getting richer at the expenses of the poor, who are getting poorer; as consequence
of this, wealth and poverty are interdependent - increased wealth of a few is generated at the
expense of increased poverty of many. This trend, unfortunately, is gaining momentum in
many developing countries. How long will the masses tolerate overexploitation, inequality,
segregation, unemployment, malnutrition and the so many other problems afflicting large
sectors of the population of many countries? Are the world leaders, the Heads of State, caring
to answer this question? World leaders are surely aware that peace cannot prevail on earth
when people struggle for their survival. Still much money, too much money indeed, is spent in
weapons, especially in developing countries. Industrialised countries, traditional suppliers of
arms to poor countries fighting each other, are getting many financial benefits from this state
of affairs. Everybody is aware that, if the money spent in weapons were invested in
development projects peace would prevail in many countries presently afflicted by poverty
and political conflicts. Still very little is done to change this state of affairs!
