PROPOSAL FOR A NEW APPROACH TO RURAL VILLAGE WATER

PROGRAM IN MAHARASHTRA BY APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

Improving Water Quality of Hand-dug wells and Unprotected Open
Holes

18. The main water sources for rural villages in Maharashtra are drilled wells, hand-dug wells, unlined large size irrigation wells, rudimentary pits and open holes. These water sources are sited in seepage zones, dry river beds, river banks, depressions, and other favourable geological and geomorphological conditions; open holes rarely exceed 10 m depth.

19. The appropriate technical solution for improving water quality will depend on a number of factors such as the characteristics of the water source to be upgraded, the number of users and their distribution, the distance from the village, the availability of electrical power, the distance from motorable roads.
