PROPOSAL FOR A NEW APPROACH TO RURAL VILLAGE WATER PROGRAM IN MAHARASHTRA BY APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY By Dr. Costantino Faillace |
| Upgrading Government Wells 31. Most villages in Maharashtra have more than one hand dug well; villages with a population of more than 500 people, generally have a water supply system consisting in the water source, the electrical pump, pipes and public taps. The well top is open to all kind of pollutants. 32. The diameter of most of the government masonery lined wells is 3 m, well depths range from 4 m to 14-15 m, the average well depth is around 10 m. These wells are generally properly constructed and could supply safe water if covered by re-inforced concrete slab. The cover should have a 6" hole for inserting the pump, a manhole 60 cm diameter, or square one 60 x 60 cm, so that its hinged cover can be lifted and closed by padlock, if necessary, see Fig. 5. |
