RE-ASSESSING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BUCKET PUMP - A SIMPLE WATER
LIFTING DEVICE FOR SMALL RURAL VILLAGES

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

Villages where the Installation of the Bucket Pump is Appropriate

The bucket pump can be used for different purposes and under
different conditions, depending on the factors mentioned above.
Anyhow, as the paper deals mainly with small rural communities,
the villages that most likely will take advantage from the use of
the bucket pump are the following:

1) Villages with boreholes yielding less than 300 liters per hour
if the water level is not deeper than 35 ft; in the latter case
the number of users should not be more than 30-40 people and
water should be used mainly for drinking and cooking.

2) Remote villages not accessible by vehicles during the wet
season for maintenance of hand-pumps.

3) Small villages with populations of less than 100 people, if
the well yield is low; larger villages (up to 200 people) if the
yield is high and the water level is not deeper than 15 ft.
