RE-ASSESSING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BUCKET PUMP - A SIMPLE WATER
LIFTING DEVICE FOR SMALL RURAL VILLAGES

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

The Pooja Ceremony

Pooja is performed at the end of the pump installation, all
participants pay their respect by kneeling in front of the little
mandir for darshan.( See Photo )

The Pooja is generally performed by a lady who volunteers or is
selected by the villagers. Garlands, cum-cum, incense sticks and
a coconut are used during the Pooja while people sing religious
songs. The Pooja creates an intense moment of happiness among the
participants, rarely felt in Adivasi villages. At the end of the
ceremony, coconut chips and biscuits are distributed as Prasad to
the villagers. During the Pooja all the social barriers
disappear, rich and poor, Adivasis and Patils, feel a great sense
of spirituality that invades all participants.

The Pooja is also the official act of consigning the well to the
villagers who, from that moment, as they assure, assume full
responsibility for its maintenance.
