RE-ASSESSING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BUCKET PUMP - A SIMPLE WATER
LIFTING DEVICE FOR SMALL RURAL VILLAGES

By Dr. Costantino Faillace

Advantages of the Bucket Pump with Respect to Mark II and Mark
III Hand-pumps

1. The bucket pump requires only minor maintenance as no
mechanical parts are involved. The only requirement is to put
some grease periodically on the bearings of the drum and to
replace, after some years, the steel rope and the cylinder. This
minor maintenance can easily be done by the villagers.

2. The bucket pump is easily accepted by the people as it is an
improved version of their traditional way of collecting water.

3. It can be manufactured locally in a welding workshop.

4. It can be installed in boreholes as shallow as 60-70 ft deep
and even shallower for high yielding boreholes as in the case of
the well in Lakhivali Gambhul Pada (Bhiwandi Taluka) which has a
depth of 28 ft only.

5. Its cost is only 30% of that of a 200 ft government borehole
equipped with a hand pump.
