The Tribal People of India

Results of Schemes Implemented for Primitive tribes in Maharashtra

In 1981-82 and in 1982-83 various schemes were implemented to uplift the extremely backwards conditions of the Madio Gonds, the Kolams and the Katkaris people. The results of the survey carried out to evaluate the results of these schemes are outlined ahead. The schemes consisted in supplying to people animals and various items to increase their productivities and generate additional income.

1.Schemes that Proved Useful

  • Supply of Bullock pair and carts. This scheme was very useful specially in sugar cane and cotton areas. Beneficiaries can undertake transportation activities along with the day to-day activities.
  • Demonstration plots and study tours.
  • Supply of "Mangalore" tiles, supply of cloths and utensils.
  • Construction of "Ghotul" huts proved useful for gathering and ceremonies.

2.Schemes that Proved Useless

  • Supply of goats, poultry birds, pigs, milk animals resulted in a big failure as the majority of animals died for various reasons but mainly due to ignorance of the beneficiary in rearing them.
  • Supply of nylon nets, cattle feed and medicines, seeds, fertilizers and implements, supply of fruit trees. Nylon nets were not adequate to their needs, cattle were not given feed and medicines, seeds and fertilizers were sold to non tribals, fruit trees were not taken because had to wait years to get income from fruits.

These poor results indicate that unless assistance and training is given on a continual basis and for several years, results in supplying the tribals with items which are supposed to increase their income will not benefit them.
