Indebtness in Thane District in 1979

The survey on indebtedness was carried out in the area of Palgar and Wada Thasils of Thane District and gave the following results.

  • 31.19% tribal families are indebted against 11.76 of non tribal families;
  • 56.38% of indebted families are cultivators and 22.22% are agricultural labourers;
  • 60.50% of loan is for agricultural activities, 30.6% for marriage and 5.5% for social events (religious functions, death ceremony, sickness, etc.);
  • The role of money lenders in recent years has been reduced to only 2%, 63% borrowing is from cooperative societies and banks;
  • the government has much replaced the landlords, the advance is 33% of the loans;
  • loan is given for productive purpose and is to be repaid after harvest at 1.5 or twice the quantity given;
  • 54% of the Adivasi borrowers do not know the rate of interest charged;
  • 27% have to pay in form of agricultural labour;
  • 80% of the loans given by landlords is for marriages, the remaining 20% is for other purposes;
  • Loan for marriage are repayed in the form of bonded labour;
  • In 95.4% case,security is given in form of land;
  • Family members are bonded to repay after the death of the borrower;
  • The service to the master is in some cases carried over from generation to generation.
