Tribal Village
Water Program

People's Participation
by Dr. C. Faillace

Reasons for the High Success of the Program and
of the Bucket Pump in Particular
The project has been highly successful because of the full involvement of the villagers,
right from the planning, to the implementation and maintenance of the water wells. The
bucket pump in particular, represents a clear example of simple, low-cost technology,
which takes into account the:
a) low cost of the installation,
b) reduced maintenance problems,
c) religious and cultural aspects of the people, and
d) people’s participation.
The Indian Water Works Association has recently recommended to the Indian
Government the use of the bucket pump for small rural villages, especially those located in
remote areas where other type of pumps are not appropriate.
