Computing Research Outcomes
Department of Computer Sciences
We have identified several
areas of computing research
that have strategic importance for
Florida Tech,
the
College of Engineering,
and the
Department of Computer Sciences.
Within a few years, we expect
to achieve research goals that have been documented in
Computing Research Objectives.
To determine if we are moving in the right direction,
we outline here a set of immediate and continual outcomes
that can be used to steer our research course.
How these outcomes will be measured is described in
Computing Research Assessment.
Research and scholarship is required of faculty and expected of students.
Although the research and scholarship of faculty is intertwined with
that of students, we choose for simplicity to separate the expected
outcomes even though they often overlap or are identical.
Besides faculty and students, there must be research infrastructure
and resources available.
Faculty and students must be provided an environment conducive to
research and scholarship.
The university, college, and department must be able to acquire
research space, equipment, faculty, support staff, and students in order to
establish this environment.
With the assistance of the university and the college of engineering,
the department will be able to:
- Acquire adequate research laboratory and office space.
- Acquire adequate research equipment: computers, software,
networks, and peripherals.
- Recruit faculty willing and able to conduct research in
established areas or in new areas ripe with potential.
- Recruit students willing and able to collaborate with
faculty and other students in the development of research programs.
Faculty are required to conduct research and engage in scholarly
activity.
To do so, the university and department must provide an environment
that is conducive to this effort.
The faculty research outcomes listed here are not to be interpreted as
requirements on individual members of the faculty, but expectations on
the faculty as a whole with individuals contributing in part.
Under the above assumptions and restrictions,
faculty in the department will be able to:
- Publish their research in peer-refereed journals
and conferences.
- Write books or chapters on subjects in which they are expert.
- Develop preliminary research results for publication in
technical reports, conferences and workshops that are not fully
refereed, but reviewed.
- Gain recognition as invited speakers at conferences and
organizations.
- Apply for and receive external funding to support their research.
- Develop useful software applications.
- Participate in the organization of conferences and workshops.
- Integrate their research into the curriculum.
Students are expected to conduct research and engage in scholarly
activity,
in particular, Ph.D. students are required to do so.
The university and department must provide an environment
that is conducive to this effort.
The student research outcomes listed here are not to be interpreted as
requirements on individual students, but expectations on
the department's student body as a whole with individuals contributing
in part.
Under the above assumptions and restrictions,
students in the department will be able to:
- Collaborate in research that leads to publication peer-refereed
journals and conferences.
- Contribute to books or book chapters.
- Author preliminary research results for publication in
technical reports, and reviewed conferences and workshops.
- Receive tuition and stipends for participation in research projects.
- Develop useful software applications.
- Participate in conferences and workshops.
- Learn new research results through special topics and advanced
course work.
