Information and Registration for the Software Engineering Comprehensive Exam
Department of Computer Sciences
This document contains information about the written exams required of
Master's students in the Software Engineering program at Florida Tech.
These includes not only the students at the main campus,
but also those at Orlando, the Kennedy Space Center,
Patrick Air Force Base as well.
These students should consider carefully the
information contained here and when they are prepared,
register for the written exams using the form below.
Additional information on the comprehensive examination can be found
by following the links below.
The comprehensive exam for the Master's of Science in Software Engineering is
a written exam given in the
tenth and eleventh week of Fall and Spring semesters.
The student must pass four tests.
An exam based on the material covered in Software Engineering 1 and 2
(SWE 5001/5002) is required. Two exams are to be elected from:
software testing, requirements engineering, software metrics, or
analysis of algorithms. One exam must be chosen form any of the
general Computer Science areas: Applied Software, Foundations,
Software, Systems (with the exception of the Software Engineering exam
offered in the Software area.
See the Florida Tech Graduate Policy Manual
for additional university policy on Comprehensive Examinations.
The software engineering area includes questions from
Software Engineering 1 and 2.
Software Engineering students will be expected to
be capable of answering questions on software life-cycle, requirements
analysis, design, testing, and metrics. Students who earn a B or
better in SWE 5001/5002 and have retained their understanding of that
topic, should be moderately well prepared to pass this portion of the
comprehensive exam. The actual exam may be broader than some versions
of this course sequence. Most students will need to review and prepare
for the comprehensive exam.
Software Engineering students must take two elective exams
chosen from:
- Requirements Engineering
- Software Metrics and Models
(Notes 1)
(Notes 2)
- Software Testing and Quality Assurance
- Analysis of Algorithms
Content of the exams may vary from that presented in any particular
class. Students should refer to the appropriate study guide. Most
students will need to review and prepare for the comprehensive exam
In order to display an understanding of Computer Science, Software
Engineering students must take one elective exam chosen from the four
areas of general Computer Science
The four areas are:
- Applied Software
- Foundations
- Software (the Software Engineering exam may not be chosen from this area)
- Systems
(refer to the
Computer Science Master of Science Comprehensive Examination page
for a listing of the topics with each area).
Starting in the Fall of 2003, the department instituted changes in the
curriculum requirements of the Master of Software Engineering program.
These changes will lead, eventually, to some changes in the
comprehensive examination for the program.
Comprehensive Examination Schedule
The comprehensive examination is offered about the tenth week of
classes every Fall and Spring semester. Area exams are offered on two
consecutive Thursdays and Fridays. The schedule for the
